Adjustable Gastric Banding

One type of weight loss surgery is adjustable gastric banding. This surgery involves placing an inflatable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The gastric band (either a LAP-BAND® or Realize band) is inflated, shrinking the upper stomach pouch, restricting stomach capacity, which  helps you eat less and feel full longer.
Since no part of the stomach or intestine is cut or removed, the band is considered to be the least severe of the types of bariatric surgeries.Patients generally experience less pain and scarring.  Patients typically spend less than 24 hours in the hospital, including overnight hospitalization, and can usually resume normal activities within one week.

No permanent changes are made to the body during the gastric banding procedure. Adjustments can be made when needed with a simple outpatient visit.

Advantages of Adjustable Gastric Banding:

  • Least invasive weight-loss surgery approach
  • No stomach stapling or cutting or intestinal re-routing
  • Procedure is adjustable and reversible
  • Lowest rate of complications during bariatric surgery
  • Lowest risk of malnutrition issues
  • Lowest mortality rate of bariatric surgical procedures

  Disadvantages of Adjustable Gastric Banding:

  • Slower initial weight loss than other forms of bariatric surgery
  • Regular follow-up is critical for optimal results
  • Requires an implanted medical device, the gastric band
  • Effectiveness is reduced if the band slips
  • Minor surgery could be required to adjust access port used to inflate the band
  • Risk of band eroding or adverse reaction to silicone

Risks and Complications
Complications include migration of the gastric band system, infection or leakage of the band or reservoir. Some patients may experience more nausea and vomiting than others.  Rapid weight loss may also cause complications.  There is still a chance of not losing weight or possibly even gaining weight.  In certain instances, the band may need to be removed or replaced. It’s extremely important to discuss the benefits and risks of weight loss surgery with your surgeon.  To learn more about gastric banding with LAP-BAND® or a Realize band, attend a seminar or view a seminar online.
